What last year's driver actually saves you

Consecutive generations of the same driver, priced from recorded sales rather than from the discount on the box.

"Buy last year's model" is the most repeated piece of golf advice there is, and almost nobody attaches a number to it. The number matters: if the previous generation is 10% cheaper it is not worth the compromise, and if it is 40% cheaper very little else in the bag competes with it.

The current generation's typical price against the one before it, for every driver where we have researched both. The Ping G430 Max is the widest gap: £529.00 for the G440 Max against £379.00, a saving of 28%.

Across the one pair the previous generation is 28% cheaper. That is a genuinely large number for equipment separated by about two years and, in most cases, a few yards nobody has reliably measured on a golf course.

The timing part

The saving is not sitting there all year. A driver falls when its successor is announced, because that is the moment every shop holding stock discounts and every owner who upgrades annually lists theirs. Before the announcement you are paying current-model money for a club that is about to stop being the current model, which is the worst square on the board.

So the rule with the timing attached: buy the outgoing model in the weeks after the new one ships, not in the months before. Same club, and the announcement has done the negotiating.

Why the fall is a cliff and not a slope

Two things happen on the same day, and they compound. Every shop still holding the outgoing model has to clear it before the new stock lands, so they all discount at once. And every golfer who upgrades annually lists their old driver in the same fortnight, so private supply spikes at exactly the moment retail supply is being marked down. Demand has not changed. Supply has doubled twice over.

The corollary is that the fall is mostly finished within a few months. A club two generations old has already taken both hits and is close to its floor, which is why the step from the previous generation to the one before it is smaller than the step from current to previous. You are paid the most for accepting the first year of age and progressively less after that.

What you are actually giving up

Honestly: less than the marketing implies and more than nothing. Driver head design is a mature field constrained by the same rules for everyone, and the year-on-year gains that get announced are small, measured under controlled conditions, and quoted against the model from several years ago rather than against last year's.

The real differences are usually adjustability and fitting range rather than raw distance. A newer head often has a wider adjustment window, which matters if you are between settings, and stock shaft options change year to year. If you are being properly fitted, let the fitting decide. If you are buying off a listing, the generation gap is the cheapest yardage you will ever buy, in the sense that it costs nothing at all.

When last year's model is the wrong buy

Three cases. If the outgoing model is scarce in your loft and dexterity, the discount evaporates and you will wait months for the right one. If the successor changed something structural rather than incremental, the two are not really comparable and the older one is simply an older club. And if you are buying new rather than used, the last-generation new stock is often priced within a few pounds of the current model on discount, at which point the argument disappears entirely.

What we are not saying

Nothing here is a claim about performance. We measure prices. Whether a G440 Max is worth £150.00 more than a G430 Max to you is a question for a launch monitor and your own swing, and anyone answering it from a spreadsheet is guessing.

We also have researched launch prices for one brand pair only, and a pattern from a handful of models is a pattern, not a law. It goes in the piece because we can show you the numbers behind it, and the figures above update whenever the medians move.

The value ranking keeps this current, and what a used driver costs covers the bands the prices above sit in.

AdLinks to sellers are affiliate-tagged where we have a programme. If you buy, this site may earn a small commission at no extra cost to you. It plays no part in any figure above, which are computed from prices before any link is built. How this works.
